OCE 4 Spectrum of light and spirit

Image
Spectrum of Light and Spirit  UMBC's Center for Art Design and Visual Culture is located within the fine arts building. The center is near the Performing Arts and Humanities Building and the Engineering Building. CADVC has been a part of UMBC since 1989 as the Fine arts gallery before renaming in 2003. Upon entering, you are greeted by students of the University. The current exhibition is from Oletha DeVane and is called Spectrum of Light and Spirit. The gallery comprises dozens of colorful works that feel the entirety of the space. Each artwork feels like the characters are breaking through the canvas. Additionally, all the colors are vibrant and draw your attention to the elements used to create the piece. The artwork on display showcases work over five decades and shows elements of the places she's traveled to in that time. The gallery makes great use of space to allow the focus to be solely the artwork. Visitors are able to easily navigate the space, but there is not so ...

OCE 3 UMBC Library exhibition

Image
UMBC Library Gallery : Formations  The UMBC library consistently hosts exhibitioners' work to showcase the different artworks. Currently, the University is showcasing the work of Aaron Siskind, who is known as a pioneering figure of photography during the 20th century. Mr.Siskind's work is a part of the UMBC photography collections and highlights his work through the 1930s - 1960s. The collection comprises 55 of Siskind's portfolios for students and guests to explore his work. The collection is on display until March 12th, 2023. The University does a fantastic job of lighting each piece so that you see the best quality of each photograph. With overall muted lighting, the attention when you first enter the gallery is the red wall that details the exhibition and the title of Formations. One criticism I have regarding the gallery is the layout of the space. There is a lot of empty space where there needs to be an artwork. If the University could place pieces within the space,...

blog 5 digital story

You’ve got a friend in me. It's hard to believe how old you are now. It's been twenty-four years since we first met, and even before your parents knew you, I knew you. We’ve practically grown up together. I came into the family just nine months before you did. I remember when your older sisters were told they would be older and promoted to big sisters. Your sister Sharde’ seemed unphased, but Christina was ecstatic at the idea of being a big sister. Nobody knew what you would be or the person would become, but you arrived just after Christmas, and you are the gift that keeps giving.  Throughout your childhood, I witnessed you be so imaginative and so optimistic. Sometimes I saw you down, but you always got back up and preserved. Then there was the time when you started to spiral, and I expected you to get back up, but you didn’t. It took several months before I could tell if you were still there. After all that time, I saw you blend your younger self with what you were becoming...

The American dream for African Americans, What does it look like? By Michael Ford  The American dream is the idea that everyone is allowed to have a house with a white picket fence and the ability to enjoy their lives. Ideally, being that America is one of the wealthiest countries in the world, this should be a reality for almost anyone. However, some people are not afforded the same advantages to achieve their dream. Considering the historical relationship between African Americans and America, what can be conceptualized as their American dream? To examine this relationship, we need to deep dive into the elements of the American dream. The relationship between the United States and African Americans is long and well-documented. Systemic inequalities have hindered African Americans' progress in many areas, specifically financially. To examine whether the American Dream exists, we must examine one of America's most oppressed groups. Does the American Dream still exist? The ide...

OCE 2 Hispanic Heritage Month celebration

Image
Hispanic Heritage Month celebration Early in October, I attended a small celebration of Hispanic Heritage at Columbia Mall. The event included food samplings as well as performances from various bands. The event was open and accessible for mall-goers and others in the community. It took place around 5pm and concluded at 8pm. Some drawbacks from the event are fixes that could easily be improved upon. One of the most significant issues was the timing, as It took place on a weekday night, which impacted the event participation. In addition, seating was minimal, so not everyone could sit. In addition, the weather was drafty, which may have affected attendance. Overall the event was very welcoming and helped express different cultures to those who attended.

What describes a Home? The Merriam-webster dictionary definition of Home is one's place of residence or a place of origin. I believe that a home is a place of emotional attachment that allows a person to be at peace and feel safe within the space. I think a home isn't limited to a person's primary residence; rather, it encompasses any place with a warm emotional attachment. Examples include a relative's house, school, place of worship, or historical buildings. In some contexts, people refer to countries of origin as home because of the cultural values and practices they are accustomed to. What Places Matter to Me ? I care about places that allow me to be at ease, such as beaches, sports stadiums, and my bedroom.  Beaches provide a chance for me to really appreciate nature compared to other places as well as relax. Sports stadiums provide comfort as I am around semi-like-minded individuals who just want to escape the outside world and just be immersed in a game for a f...
